Check out the maximum capacity of each beach of Portugal

As part of its fight against the coronavirus epidemic, Portugal has decided to set up a limited number of people who can be on each beach at the same time. If some Portuguese beaches are very large and can accommodate thousands of people, others are smaller and more strongly implanted by the tides and have their capacity limited to less than 20. The Portugal Environment Agency (APA) comes to disclose the maximum capacity for each range. Lisbob, the expatriate assistant, tells you what will change on the Portuguese beaches is summer.

Documents released on Wednesday by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) indicate only the capacity of the beaches in the Algarve and the Tagus and West regions. With the start of the bathing season in just over a week (June 6), three lists were published this Wednesday, revealing the maximum capacity of 216 beaches located in the Barlavento and Sotavento of the Algarve and in the regions of the Tagus and the West.

Documents published by the APA show that the beaches with the largest capacity are mainly those in the Algarve, with Faro and Monte Gordo being able to accommodate up to 12,600 people. Among those with the highest capacity, the beach at Nazaré wins the jackpot with 17,100, while Fonte da Telha can receive 14,500 and Carcavelos 12,100.

Guincho beach is divided into 2 parts, north and south, with a maximum capacity of 2,300 and 3,000 visitors respectively. Between Lisbon and Cascais, the page of Santo Amaro will accommodate 4,100 people and that of Paço d'Arcs 1,000.

With regard to the Portuguese beaches of lower capacity, the most problematic are also located further south of the country. The smallest beach is that of Marinha, in Lagoa, which can only count from 15 to 20 people depending on the tide.

Arrifes beach in Albufeira should also be difficult to access, as it can only accommodate 30 to 40 people, and Tremoços beach, also in Lagoa, will have a maximum capacity of 60 to 80 bathers.

According to a note published by the Portuguese Environment Agency, among the criteria that define the capacity of a beach, the following stand out:

  • Size of the beach;

  • Influence of the tides;

  • Social distancing and separation of access rules;

  • Parking capacity;

  • And certain specific risk factors associated with coastal risk.
