The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has just issued a heat alert for 8 districts in Portugal. The IPMA predicts "the persistence of high maximum temperature values", with temperatures that will reach 35 degrees this Tuesday inland, without falling below 20º overnight. This alert will be orange for Madeira, the second most serious in Portugal, and will be yellow for the rest of the districts under alert. 8 districts of Portugal under weather alert for extreme warm and UV radiation
On Tuesday and Wednesday, eight districts of mainland Portugal will be subject to a yellow weather alert due to the forecast of hot weather, reported today the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). The heat will reach up to 35 degrees in eight districts of Portugal and they will be under yellow alert from tomorrow.
The districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Lisbon and Setúbal will be the subject of a yellow warning between 9 a.m. on Tuesday and 9 p.m. on Wednesday due to the persistence of high maximum temperature values.
The IPMA has also placed the south coast of Madeira on orange alert until 9 p.m. today due to hot weather, then will then be on yellow alert. Madeira and Porto Santo will be on yellow alert until 9 p.m. Tuesday. The orange alert indicates a moderate to high risk weather situation and is issued by IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
The IPMA also provides for all the districts of mainland Portugal as well as the Madeira archipelago an alert for very high risk of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
For regions at extreme risk, the IPMA recommends avoiding exposure to the sun as much as possible and, at high levels, recommends the use of sunglasses with UV filter, hat, T-shirt, parasol, cream and avoid exposing children to the sun.
According to the IPMA, temperatures in Portugal will remain above normal throughout the month of May, with a maximum varying between 30º and 35ºC in the interior regions and between 22º and 30ºC in the rest of the territory.
