The Spanish government on Friday declared a state of emergency in the capital Madrid, due to the substantial increase in Covid-19 cases, which the newspaper "El Mundo" has just claimed. The decision was taken during an extraordinary Council of Ministers.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez defended the need to apply the measure, stressing that "it is necessary to protect public health now", quickly communicating his decision to the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.

The regime was approved with the same measures that were in force, namely the containment of the capital and other municipalities of Madrid with more than 100,000 inhabitants, where the incidence of infections is more than 500 cases.

The approval of this exceptional number took place, according to the Spanish newspaper, although shortly before 12 a.m., while Isabel Díaz Ayuso, chatting with Pedro Sánchez, in an attempt to reach a common agreement.

The Madrid executive is against the measure, in a standoff that has lasted for weeks. Madrid's Minister of Health, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, does not understand the decision. “It is very difficult to understand that a state of emergency applies when there is an obvious decrease from an epidemiological point of view. No Madrilenian will understand, ”he said a moment ago at a press conference.

Enrique Escudero also argues that “the community will negotiate every day to try to lift (the state of emergency). The government questioned our data, which we will never tolerate. We will keep a daily check. Our mission is to continue to provide this response to contain the coronavirus in the region, ”he added.
