Portugal is the second European country with the most cases of coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants

Recent figures from Portugal regarding the coronavirus epidemic are not good. This is what emerges from a study that compares all European countries and Portugal is the 2nd worst country in terms of cases of coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants. Only Sweden is worse than Portugal. A total of 6 European countries are currently closing their borders to Portuguese nationals, based in particular on this data. Portugal defends itself by showing that it tests a lot more and therefore finds more cases. Expatriate assistant Lisbob tells you all about the recent bad figures for the coronavirus epidemic in Portugal.

Portugal is the second European country with the most cases of coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants

In the past week, Sweden is the only country that has recorded more Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population than Portugal. Indeed, Portugal occupies second place in the ranking of the ratio of new infections to the coronavirus, reveals this Sunday the "Jornal Económico", which quotes "Lusa".

According to the data collected by the latter, based on figures from the respective national official sources and the European Center for Disease Control (CECD) for the period from 14 to 20 June, Portugal reported a total of 2,378 new cases, in - below the incidence of the United Kingdom (8.823), Sweden (6.359, data from June 12 to 18), France (3.280), Germany (3.113).

On the other hand, the number of new cases of coronavirus infection in Portugal this week beat those of countries strongly affected by the pandemic, such as Spain (2,333), Italy (2,026), Belgium (632) and Netherlands (906).

These figures mean that Portugal recorded, during this period, a ratio of 23.2 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure is only exceeded by the 62.47 recorded in Sweden. The threshold of 20 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants is a limit which has been adopted by certain countries and which has imposed restrictions or prohibitions imposed by several States on the entry of citizens of these two nations.

Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Slovakia, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania and the Czech Republic are among the European countries which condition or even prohibit the entry of Portuguese. To this group are added other nations which have not yet reopened their borders, such as Norway or Finland.

Portugal is defending itself by indicating that it tests much more than other countries, and therefore that it detects more cases of coronavirus. Also, even with this threshold crossing, Portugal is very close to entering the requested figures. Lisbon sees this as an unjustified decision and calls for a rapid opening of the borders.
