Galicia bans smoking in the streets. The measure, which is being finalized, would enter into force from this Thursday for the entire Galician community. The interim president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, announced this afternoon at a press conference that the text is being drafted in the afternoon of this Wednesday, in which the "possibility to ban smoking in the streets during traffic and the safety distance from other pedestrians is not guaranteed. ”

This decision aims to strengthen preventive measures against the coronavirus pandemic and to curb contagion. Alberto Núñez Feijóo recalled that tobacco smoke is a "transmission factor", that is why he "evaluates" how to write the specific paragraph that would include this measure, which would have a "general character" for all of Galicia from this Thursday, after the recommendations of the clinical committee of health experts who have been advising the Xunta since the start of the pandemic.

"When you are in the street and you walk among people without being able to keep your distance, the logical thing is not to be able to smoke", he influenced.

The president of the region of Galicia then gave a little lesson in epidemiology: if you smoke without limitation in "areas with a large influx of people", without mediating a "physical safety distance", there is a "high risk of contamination and infection". The rule is being refined to provide "legal certainty".

The idea is "to ban smoking in the streets or in public places where a physical safety distance is not possible". Smoke "interferes with neighbors" in nearby places when a smoker is "in transit or on the move" and does not alter the distance required. The measure, wanted to emphasize the regional president, would be effective from this same Thursday. It would be a first in Spain and even in Europe.

For weeks now, the health expert committee has been emphasizing the risk vector of smoking when the necessary distance from others cannot be guaranteed. “If we can't keep a distance of two meters, we can't smoke. If we want to smoke, we have to maintain a distance of two meters, ”warn Xunta advisers.
