Civil Protection warns the population

In a warning to the population, the Portuguese Civil Protection draws attention to the effects of this situation, with slippery floors and the possibility of rapid floods in urban areas, the flash floods, which have caused several victims in France recently . In Povoa do Azim too, the streets were also flooded.

In the press release, the Civil Protection authorities also warn against the possibility of falling tree branches due to stronger wind and potential accidents on the coast. Also parking of vehicles in these areas should be avoided.

According to the Portuguese National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, "the possible impact of these effects can be minimized, in particular by adopting appropriate behavior". Drivers are advised to use defensive driving, reduce speed and place snow chains on vehicles when driving in areas affected by snowfall, such as in the Serra da Estrela range.

Flooded areas to avoid

The authorities also ask not to cross the flooded areas "in order to prevent the entrainment of people or vehicles in potholes or manholes". Even if the water is not deep, you may not see the manholes open and into which it is unfortunately easy to fall, with dramatic consequences. Finally, the Portuguese Civil Protection also advises to make sure that structures such as scaffolding, signs and other suspended structures are properly fixed. Also, activities related to the sea, such as sport fishing and water sports should not be practiced at the seaside during this bad weather episode.
