The land borders between Portugal and Spain will remain closed until June 15th due to the covid-19 disease pandemic, according to the resolution of the Portuguese Council of Ministers published in the Diário da República.

Land borders controls with Spain has been carried out since March 16th at the nine crossing points authorized due to the coronavirus pandemic, and this control was to end this Thursday at 00:00.

The resolution published in the Diário da República extends, "as an exceptional and temporary measure, the reestablishment of control of people at the borders with Spain until June 15th, 2020". "Taking into account the assessment of the epidemiological situation in Portugal and the European Union and the measures proposed by the European Commission, it is important to guarantee internal security by appropriate measures which contain possible contagion lines, among which , the maintenance of the replacement, exceptionally and temporarily, the control of people at the borders, with some exceptions ", specifies the resolution, stressing that these measures were agreed between the governments of Portugal and Spain.

The resolution establishes that between May 14th and June 15th, 2020, "without prejudice to a reassessment every 10 days and a possible extension, control of persons at the Portuguese internal borders is restored". The resolution released today extends the ability to cross borders to seasonal workers with documented working relationships.

Within the framework of border control, tourist and leisure travel between the two countries is prohibited, only the transport of goods, border workers, seasonal workers, emergency and rescue vehicles and emergency services being allowed.
