Red alert for Lisbon and Leiria: 14-meter waves expected

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the districts of Lisbon and Leiria under red warning, the most serious on a scale of four due to the forecast of violent maritime disturbances following the effects of the Dora depression on the Portuguese mainland.

These two districts will be under red alert, the more severe of a scale to four, between 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. today due to the sea turmoil, forecasting northwest waves with a significant height of 7 to 8 meters, reaching a maximum height of 14 meters.

The red alert corresponds to an extremely dangerous weather situation. IPMA recommends that the population keep abreast of changing weather conditions and follow the guidelines of civil protection. Due to the strong maritime turmoil, IPMA also placed the coast of the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Setúbal, Beja and Faro, northern Madeira and Porto Santo under orange warning until midnight this Sunday.

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) and the Navy recommend, in particular to the fishing and yachting community, the possible return to the nearest port of refuge and the adoption of precautionary measures.

It also recommends avoiding the reinforcement of the mooring and close surveillance of moored and anchored boats, the sidewalks by the sea, from which the port protection jetties stand out.

It is also desirable that seafarers maintain a state of permanent surveillance and monitor the development of the meteorological situation.

The IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco due to the forecast of snowfall above 1400/1600 meters, gradually descending to 700/900 meters, between 00:00 and 18:00 on Friday.
